It’s time to pick up your camera and challenge your skill and creativity – entries are now open for the 2017 international Travel Photographer of the Year awards (TPOTY).

TPOTY 2017 has a diverse range of categories and themes to choose from. Amateur, semipro and professional photographers of all ages and from all countries are invited to enter until the closing date on September 25th. As always, TPOTY is judged by an international panel of photographers and imaging experts. This year’s jury features judges from the UK, USA, Italy, Germany and Malaysia, including the award-winning photographer and picture editor Eamonn McCabe – recently seen presenting the BBC TV Series ‘Britain in Focus: A Photographic History’ – Michelle Jana Chan (Travel Editor, Vanity Fair magazine), Michael Pritchard (Director-General of the Royal Photographic Society) and TPOTY’s first judge in Asia, picture editor and filmmaker Cheryl Brophy-Chan.

The TPOTY sponsors Fujifilm, Genesis Imaging, Hurtigruten, Páramo Directional Clothing, Photo Iconic, Plastic Sandwich and the Royal Photographic Society – joined by new sponsor Jack Wills – have provided a prize package worth around £30,000, and the winning photographers will see their work displayed at TPOTY exhibitions in the UK and overseas in 2018, including at the University of Greenwich in London’s magnificent Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site.

UK exhibitions this spring/summer provide inspiration for entrants

Looking for inspiration for the 2017 awards? Why not go along to one of the two fantastic, free-to-view exhibitions of the 2016 TPOTY-winning images that are opening soon? TPOTY is exhibiting at Princes Quay, Hull from 18th May to 30th June, as part of the ‘Roots and Routes’ season of the UK City of Culture celebrations, and in London from 4th August to 3rd September at 10 Stockwell Street at the University of Greenwich. The Greenwich exhibition also features a retrospective looking back at TPOTY since the awards began in 2003 plus a special Jack Wills photography exhibit; even more images to enjoy!

2017 Categories and prizes in detail

In addition to the significant international exposure that comes with winning TPOTY, the overall winner – the Travel Photographer of the Year 2017 – receives a prize worth over £5000: £4,000 in cash, £750 to spend on the Páramo clothing of their choice, and a Plastic Sandwich personalized leather portfolio case.

Fujifilm is sponsoring all three portfolio categories – Celebration of Humanity, Earth & Climate and Tales of Adventure – and the top entrant in each of these categories receives a Fujifilm X-Series professional camera and lens of their choice. Entrants submitting two or more portfolios will also automatically be eligible for the title of Travel Photographer of the Year 2017. The winner of the Best Single Image award in each portfolio category receives a giclée exhibition print from Genesis Imaging.

Hurtigruten and Páramo are sponsoring the three single image categories: Food!, Primary Colours and Wildlife/Sea Life. The winner of each category will enjoy a five or six-day winter or summer voyage for two people along Norway’s stunning coastline with Hurtigruten, including flights from the UK. The winners of Primary Colours and Wildlife/Sea Life also receive a Torres Insulator jacket from Páramo, while the winner of Food! wins a Páramo Halcon Traveller jacket.

The winner of iTravelled, the ‘Smart Shot’ category for images taken on mobile phones or tablets, receives a £500 gift card to spend with new TPOTY sponsor Jack Wills, plus a £100 bar tab to ‘The Mucky Pheasant’, Jack Wills’ vintage army truck turned travelling bar, as well as a Plastic Sandwich bespoke portfolio case.

Plastic Sandwich, Photo Iconic and Páramo are supporting ‘Destination’, the New Talent award. The winner receives £500 from TPOTY plus a personalized leather portfolio case from Plastic Sandwich, Photo Iconic tuition and a Páramo Halcon Traveller jacket.

Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2017 has two age groups – 14 years and under and 15-18 years – and the overall young winner will be chosen from the highest-placed entrants in each group. This year’s theme is My Camera, My Travels, and the Young TPOTY winner receives £500, Photo Iconic photography tuition and a Plastic Sandwich leather portfolio case. Each age group winner receives £250 plus Photo Iconic photography tuition.

The Travel Photographer of the Year, Young Travel Photographer of the Year and the winners of the portfolio, New Talent and single image categories all also receive a year’s membership of the Royal Photographic Society.

Entries can be submitted online via tpoty.com or as prints. Entry fees are £8.00 for the One Shot single image categories, £15 for portfolio and New Talent categories and entry for Young TPOTY is free.
